Concise Description:
According to some researchers, due to the continuing growth of the Internet, the currently available pool of IPv4 addresses will be exhausted by the time of IGF 2009. The consequences of this exhaustion are hard to imagine. Adoption of IPv6 is one measure that has been advocated as a solution to the growing scarcity of IPv4 addresses. But adoption of IPv6 has been slower than initial expectations. Many informed observers attribute this to market forces and other economic considerations. The issue of IPv4 scarcity and adoption of IPv6 will be an important issue for the IGF 2009.
ITU plans to organize a workshop on ‘IPv6 Policy and Deployment’ in IGF 2009 where key Internet resource management organizations as well as other interested entities will be able to discuss IPv6 related international public policy issues with an aim to fostering greater international understanding and cooperation on the migration to IPv6.
The workshop plans to discuss the following topics:
• What are the real barriers to faster adoption of IPv6? Are they technical or economical?
• Could changes in current IP address allocation policies either mitigate the scarcity of IPv4 addresses or favor the adoption of IPv6?
• What would be the impact of the growing scarcity of IPv4 addresses, especially for developing countries?
• How could potential changes in IP address management policies promote IPv6 deployment?
• How can developing countries benefit from the migration to IPv6?
• What supporting activities are in place especially for developing countries, to facilitate this migration (such as awareness raising, capacity building, etc)?
• What role can governments play in promoting the adoption of IPv6, especially in developing countries?
• Case studies from countries, enterprises, international organizations, etc
• What type and level of international cooperation is needed?
• What are the appropriate roles of various entities, both national and international?
