Welcome to the United Nations | Department of Economic and Social Affairs

Angelic Caroline Alihusain-del Castilho was born and raised in Suriname, a small country in South-America. From a relatively early age on she became involved in the civil society of Suriname, by participating in all kinds of associations, all aiming for the improvement of Surinamese their lives by improved opportunities for education resulting in improved development.

While serving as Suriname’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Indonesia as in all the positions she held before, she experienced the benefits of access to the Internet. Her career development resulted from crossing virtual borders and accessing knowledge which would not have been available under normal circumstances in a developing country. She constantly aims to increase awareness amongst civil society regarding the issues and the importance that policymakers of developing countries such as Suriname become more knowledgeable and involved on the issues pertaining to Internet Governance on a global scale.

Angelic has taken several courses in the area of Internet Governance and as a result she submitted a project to the ministry of the Foreign Affairs of Suriname aiming for improved implementation of Surinamese foreign policy through the use of the Internet. She was one of Diplo Foundations 2011 Emerging Leaders for the Digital World.

She participated in the Regional IGF in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 2011 and is convinced that there is an increased need for representatives of developing small nations to be represented at these discussions. Angelic is a representative of non-IT experts, bringing an irreplaceable experience with Internet and the Internet Governance.

In the future access to information through the internet will increasingly determine development.  Angelic strives to have Suriname constantly involved in discussions dealing with the governance of this crucially important tool.
