1. What are the major barriers to participation for women and girls in ICT, in Africa? How can those barriers be addressed and overcome?
2. What do you see as the greatest opportunities for the Internet to contribute to gender equality, in Africa?
3. What do you see as the greatest risks of technology perpetuating inequality, in Africa? And what do you think can be done to mitigate those risks?

Targets: Our session has very specific questions seeking to discuss among others: major barriers to participation for women, and people with disabilities, and how to address those barriers; we discuss opportunities for technology to contribute to gender equality in Africa; we discuss issues, and propose solutions for using the Internet and technology more broadly to address various inequalities.

Description:

The rapid expansion of digital communication infrastructure and the exponential adoption of technology requires analysis of how human rights are both exercised and violated. This session will bring together key practitioners in the digital rights and space in Africa to discuss the state of digital rights in the continent. Panelists will also discuss the required digital skills necessary for digital transformation in an effort to build a deeper understanding of the digital gap and digital divide in Africa. Participants will learn from a diverse range of experts from four corners of Africa and have the opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences through interactive sessions.

Expected Outcomes

At the end of the session, participants will have a deeper understanding of the status of digital rights in Africa. Participants will also hear and take part in sharing recommendations on key steps to take to ‘do no harm’ in the development of digital solutions and respond to emerging challenges in the area of digital rights.

Hybrid Format: We will use online platforms such as Zoom, Teams, etc as provided to ensure a smooth interaction between online and onsite visitors. We will organise a rehearsal session with speakers prior to the event to ensure they are fully aware of the platforms, the time of the event as per their time zones, and are confident of the technology being used. In addition, our session structure will be twofold: session one, will use polls to run an interactive Q&A session where participants will be asked context specific questions related to the state of digital rights in Africa to gauge their understanding of the topic. Session two will deep dive into the panel discussion with select speakers to talk about state of digital rights in their regions (north, east, west, south). Participants will be encouraged to ask questions on the chat and the moderator will drive the conversation accordingly. Towards the end of the session we will run a survey to collect feedback and capture learnings.
