2016 IGF Main Session: National and Regional IGF initiatives (NRIs)
7 December, 15:00 – 18:00 p.m. at the Main Meeting Hall
Currently, there are 79 national, regional, sub-regional and Youth IGFs (NRIs). They have emerged spontaneously, and are of an organic nature.
The NRIs are independent in their work and they share the same work principles as the global IGF, by being multistakeholder in their organization, bottom-up, open, inclusive and non-commercial.
This session will aim at making the IGF initiatives more visible and at illustrating the substantive differences that exist across countries and regions about Internet governance (IG) related issues.
The session will have two main parts:
The first one aims at illustrating the different perspectives and approaches on the similar, substantive, IG broader issues.
The topics for discussion are:
- Access and Enhancing Opportunity for the Un-Connected and Under-Connected
- Secure, Resilient and Trusted Internet from the NRIs Perspectives
Second segment will discuss the main challenges the NRIs are facing in their work, under the following broader frameworks:
- Reliable and sustainable funding sources for the NRIs events
- Challenges in how to create more awareness about Internet Governance and why stakeholders should be actively engaging
This session will allow many opportunities for the audience to engage with the representatives of the IGF initiatives, and will aim to develop a discussion dialogue with everyone present in the room and online.

15:10 - 15:20 Presentation of a State of the NRIs Landscape
15:20 - 16:50 Presentation of the two topics that are of a common interest

Plan for in-room participant engagement/interaction:
It is planned that the session will have two fixed ‘open mic’ segments, where the audience will have fixed time slots to engage with the speakers by commenting and asking relevant questions.
The Moderator will have prepared sets of questions, to boost the interventions from the floor, including as equal participants, the ones following online.
Remote moderator/Plan for online interaction:
It is planned for the session to have two remote moderators. The moderators will have the responsibility to summarize each segment timely and send to the list, communicate with the online participants and take notes in case there are comments and questions, to be taken into account when the open mic segment starts.
This session is specific, mainly because of the methodology and the diversity of the speakers. However, the NRIs will organize one more session, during the last meeting day. This will be a 90-minutes long session for the NRIs to discuss the issues that are of administrative and management nature.
The main goal of this session is for the NRIs work to be represented at the IGF;
To illustrate that the IG related issue require specific solutions, as they are different across countries and regions;
To show the IGF’s outcome spread around the world;
The community to become aware that the NRIs are key partners for any kind of [intersessional work] collaboration;
To show that the global IGF needs to strengthen its linkages to the NRIs and to help improving the NRIs
