7. Description of workshop

When the Internet was introduced as a commercial and social tool, English quickly became the most predominant language. As the Internet has grown, and access has improved, English has dwindled from 80% of all content to roughly 30%. Chinese and Spanish language sites have increased dramatically, with Chinese content alone growing by 1277.4% in the span of a decade (2000-2010).

With this current digital atmosphere, we find it imperative to add and translate Internet governance content in languages other than English. ICANNWiki has aimed to become the definitive resource for newcomers within the Internet Governance space. We recognized the importance localized and translated content after ICANN 55 in Marrakech where several participants expressed a need for a globalized resource built for their language needs in a collaborative and decentralized manner.

After introducing participants to the English, Chinese, Spanish and Swahili sites
we would like to ask questions with regard to language barriers to learning and
understanding concepts within Internet governance.

If time permits we would like to ask which regions our participants are from and
whether they believe they have a comprehensive resource for understanding
the policy, opinion and technical developments within these governance spaces in their own language. After this we’d like to know if there is anything they can see about these beta sites that could be improved. We would also like to take a quick written poll at the end to determine which subjects participants would like to see translated.

Dustin Phillips and Jacqueline Treiber currently aim to present fully operational, standalone wikis on the subject of Internet governance in Chinese, Spanish and Swahili by the end of 2016. It is important to us to understand the needs of the community and potentially connect with others who may want to collaborate and strengthen this project that will ultimately help the entire community.

We would like to pose the same questions we will pose to our live participation as we will to our online community. This will include an online poll regarding origin, questionnaire regarding IG resources and any community informational needs. We will leave time at the end for questions from both in-person participants and online attendees.
