The Policy Network on AI addresses policy matters related to the governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is a global multistakeholder effort hosted by the United Nations' Internet Governance Forum.
Global multistakeholder effort on AI
PNAI brings diverse stakeholders from across the world together for timely discussions on AI. The primary goal is to foster dialogue and contribute to the global AI policy discourse. PNAI provides a platform for stakeholders and changemakers in the AI field from around the world to contribute their expertise, insights, and recommendations. PNAI is uniquely positioned to provide global and multidisciplinary stakeholder view on AI and data governance. The Policy Network is active in sharing the community’s expert knowledge and contributing to ongoing global AI policymaking dialogues, processes and consultations.
The multistakeholder community's input and advice are crucial for addressing advanced technologies, including AI. The UN Secretary-General's Our Common Agenda Report explicitly calls for the input and advice of the multistakeholder community on addressing advanced technologies, including AI, with the view of incorporating such advice and input in a Global Digital Compact to be agreed at the Summit of the Future in 2024.
Four new PNAI focus areas for 2024, building on the previous AI discussions
PNAI’s work started in 2023. The new Policy Network engaged in an open and global multistakeholder process and delivered a report on AI and data governance. The report was presented and discussed at the 18th annual IGF meeting in Kyoto, Japan, in October 2023.
This year, PNAI will continue fruitful discussions on AI and data governance, and further strengthen the multistakeholder community. PNAI’s four thematic focus areas for 2024 are: AI governance, interoperability and good practices; Environmental sustainability within the AI value chain; Labour issues throughout AI's life cycle; and; Liability as a mechanism for ensuring AI accountability. The Policy Network will explore these topics in meetings, arrange webinars and draft a policy brief summarizing key findings and recommendations that emerge from the discussions. Participation in and contribution to PNAI are open to everyone.
The work builds upon previous discussions, policies, and the wealth of knowledge within the IGF community on issues relevant to AI. PNAI emerged at the request of the community following the discussions held at the 17th annual IGF meeting in Addis Ababa and its main session on Addressing Advanced Technologies, including Artificial Intelligence. The Addis Ababa IGF Messages conclude that the “IGF could be used as a platform for developing cooperation mechanisms on artificial intelligence. A policy network on artificial intelligence could be considered for the upcoming work streams in order to review the implementation of different principles with appropriate tools and metrics.”
