Targets: Age Assurance systems can support safe spaces and ensure protection of users in digital services from abuse, violence and exploitation. Creating age-appropriate digital services enables access to inclusive education for all. Also, age-appropriateness allows for the implementation of pre-cautionary measures directly in the services for those who need to be protected from violence, especially women and girls. Eventually co-operation of all stakeholders and institutions is necessary to ensure a safe and secure digital environment for all.

    Description
Whether digital services are appropriate for users of all ages or otherwise age thresholds and age gated areas should be provided in order to protect minors from unintended consequences is being discussed widely, also addressed as social media bans for underaged users. But, while age-appropriate design is being discussed mainly in regard of children it is also relevant for other age groups. Usability and accessibility of websites will be improved when specific needs of groups of users are taken into account from the very beginning of applications’ development in a so called by-design approach. In order to provide users with settings and preferences appropriate for their age group, the service needs to assess firstly the age of the respective user. But, how can this be done still preserving the anonymity of the user and at the same time respecting their right to privacy? Age assurance methods range from those based on ID cards or biometrical data to a certificate-based verification infrastructure. At the Global Age Assurance Standards Summit 2025 the International Standard ISO/IEC 27566 for age assurance systems will be adopted in April 2025. In this Lightning Talk we will present the status quo of age assurance and its inter-relationship with age-appropriate design. Benefits and challenges as well as experiences from around the world will be discussed with participants.

The two speakers will give an overview on the status quo of age-appropriate design approaches and report back from GAASS 2025 and standardisation of age assurance systems. The moderator will engage both the on-site and the online-participants in a lively debate. In addition, the participants engagement will be facilitated by a factsheet on age assurance providing links to different providers of AA systems, available online and as print-out distributed in IGF village in advance of the Lightning Talk.
