The General Assembly resolution 70/125 on the “Outcome document of the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society” (WSIS) calls for the convening of a General Assembly high-level meeting in 2025 to conduct a comprehensive review of the progress made in implementing the outcomes of WSIS, commonly referred to as the WSIS+20 review. This review will involve the input and participation of all stakeholders and will serve as an important milestone to evaluate the achievements and challenges since 2005, while also contributing to the review process for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
During this review, among other things, the UN General Assembly will also review the IGF’s mandate. Currently in its third mandate, the review will assess the IGF’s effectiveness in addressing digital policy matters through a multistakeholder model and developing digital capacity, and determine the future direction of its mandate, ensuring its continued relevance in the evolving digital landscape.
The 20th annual meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF 2025) in Norway will provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to share their perspectives on the overall WSIS+20 review and specifically on the IGF.
The IGF main session on the future of the IGF will take place on Thursday, 26 June from 11:30 to 13:00 in the Plenary Hall. There will be IGF High-Level Leaders’ sessions “Charting the Path Forward for the WSIS+20 Review and Role of the IGF” on 27 June from 09:00 to 10:30, followed by the United Nations segment from 11:00 to 12:30.
