About this Session
During this session we will discuss whether environment and health issues are often raised by people and how do societies see environmental issues and the role of modern technologies in its protection. We would also talk about tech - whether it could help us to solve the problem that we have with climate change.
Description

4.11.2020 - 9.30-10.30 UTC The growing population of the Earth's population and rapid economic growth are causing changes in its ecosystems, resulting in climate change. Droughts in areas previously rich in water, strong violent winds, the disappearance of transition seasons, are phenomena that accompany us more and more often also in Poland. It has a negative impact on our quality of life, agriculture or even safety. Fortunately, technological development is not only co-responsible for the degradation of the environment, but also brings us solutions to problems. To evaluate a particular technology, we need a balance sheet showing that new tools solve more problems than they create. It is worth to look at this issue in three examples 1) renewable energy sources, 2) robotics and 3) artificial intelligence. Do we already have a technology that allows for efficient use of wind or solar energy and at the same time does not drain the planet's resources of raw materials in the production of windmills or panels? Will robots, e.g. drones, allow us not only to remove the effects of natural disasters faster, but also to counter them? Will the analysis of large amounts of data coming from increasingly dense sensor networks allow us to understand and predict climatic phenomena in more than a three-day perspective? Can we reduce ecological costs of processing such large amounts of data? Can we use technology to reverse global warming? What technology will help us deal with the upcoming water crisis? These are only examples of questions that we hope will be answered during the planned session.
