Policy Question(s)

1. What kinds of citizen enlightenment campaigns have been conducted to raise awareness on cybersecurity?
2. What laws and policies exist to not just punish, but prevent cybercrime?
3. What approaches have worked in different countries and how can they be replicated where it is needed?

What will participants gain from attending this session? Learn about cybercrime, what makes it attractive to people, the impact it has on victims and the society, and what can be done to deter people from becoming cybercriminals.

Description:

This session considers ways to reduce interest in cybercrime especially among the youth. It explores how the menace has grown and is spreading across Africa in recent years, and seeks to learn from the different approaches that have been yielded results in different countries to discourage and deter others from becoming cybercriminals. Nipping the menace of cybercrime in the bud implies that preventative measures are more ideal than corrective ones - after the deed has been done.

Expected Outcomes

This is a conversation that we hope to discuss at the regional level (WAYIGF & AfIGF), as a key outcome will be to get more people interested in being cybersecurity professionals, instead of cybercriminals. We expect to improve the collaboration between the western countries to see what initiatives, policies, and programs have succeeded in fighting cybercrime early on.

Hybrid Format: The moderators will ask a series of questions the speakers in order to guide the discussions. This ensures that online speakers are allowed to contribute equally. The session will provide a 20 minute session for attendees to contribute and ask questions, as the online moderator keeps tabs on the online conversations in zoom.
