What will participants gain from attending this session? Participants will gain insights into the challenges faced by children in accessing and using digital technologies. They will also learn about the strategies and approbated policies that can be implemented to empower the younger generations and teach them how to confidently navigate the digital world. Moreover everyone will have an opportunity to share ideas with experts and peers in the field of online safety and child protection.
Description:
The session aims to discuss two critical topics that are interlinked and of utmost importance in today's digital age. Firstly, the establishment of a safe and stable digital environment, which is essential for bridging the digital divide and ensuring access to education, health, and entertainment. Secondly, the need to ensure child safety both on- and offline, as new threats to human rights emerge with increasing connectivity and the spread of digital technologies.
Safeguarding children's rights online is a key aspect of this discussion, as the Dark web and destructive content pose significant risks to the online safety of children. This workshop aims to bring together stakeholders to share their views on how the governments and tech companies should work together to promote online safety for kids and safeguard children’s rights. Another pillar of the discussion would be dedicated to empowering and educating children on how to safely navigate the Internet.
On the other hand, it is crucial that best practices and methods aimed to promote online safety for kids do not disrupt or restrain the digital economies. This issue is of significant relevance to the wider discussion on the core values and principles of the Global Digital Compact. It is essential to ensure that the universal rules for the digital environment accommodate values of freedom, respect for human rights and human dignity, especially with regard to the younger generations.
Expected outcomes of a workshop on child online safety will include:
1. Increased awareness of the challenges faced by children in accessing and using digital technologies safely and equitably.
2. Enhanced understanding of the strategies and policies that can be implemented to empower the next generation in navigating the digital world.
3. Identification of best practices and innovative approaches for promoting digital literacy and online safety among children.
4. Building new partnerships and collaborations among participants, including experts, practitioners, policymakers, and members of civil society organizations.
5. Creation of knowledge products, such as reports, policy briefs, or research papers, that can facilitate future work in this area.
6. Follow-up events or processes, such as webinars, training sessions, or advocacy campaigns, that build on the outcomes of the workshop and advance the goals of child online safety.
Hybrid Format: 1. To facilitate interaction between onsite and online speakers and attendees we will use a platform that allows for seamless integration of onsite and online participants, such as Zoom or Webex.
2. To design the session in the best possible way for online and onsite participants, organizers will assign a dedicated moderator who can manage the flow of the session and ensure that both onsite and online participants have equal opportunities to speak and ask questions. Moreover before the workshop, organizers will contact participants of the discussion and provide guidelines for both onsite and online participants on how to engage in discussion in the best possible manner.
3. Organizers will incorporate interactive elements, such as instant polling & real-time visualization and live Q&A rounds that allow for real-time engagement and feedback from all participants.
