What will participants gain from attending this session? This session aims to inspire participants to think critically about the role of evidence-based research and its accessibility design promotes gender justice in Africa therefore to identify concrete actions that can create an internet we want – one that is inclusive, equitable, and just for All. A working report highlighting the session discussions and insights from the speakers and participants that will be publicly shared and used as a tool for advocacy on open approaches to knowledge sharing.
Description:
Despite advocacy efforts, inherent bias still exists in Africa, and oftentimes technology is used as a tool or platform that worsens inherent structural discrimination and injustice. Just because technology is being built on the African continent does not mean that issues cannot emerge, such as perpetuating harm around people identifying as black /or women /or gender diverse or in their sexual diversity. It is crucial to assess the opportunities and harms of African innovation using artificial intelligence and to unpack power dynamics using a feminist perspective.
How do we fill in the gaps in the discussion around data and digital technologies from an African feminist perspective with limited open-source knowledge available for people to download and engage with, particularly resources written by African women and marginalized groups. Research and Knowledge may be available but is not necessarily accessible and simplified. Designing tools and dashboards that track gender justice indicators to better influence policy and advocate for reform is a humanized approach to addressing inequality. It is of importance to mention that tools and dashboards tracking subjects such affordability, accessibility exist however specialised reports highlighting gender justice indicators remain an opportunity to explore.
In this session we will visualize how open knowledge which including publicly available research, training and advocacy toolkits create an opportunity to influence and shape policy discourse that advocates for gender justice. Open knowledge interrogates existing policies ,laws and innovation and how gender and sexuality is framed to ensure that marginalised groups are not left behind.
This IGF session seeks to create an opportunity for open dialogue and collaboration on how best to advance research and open knowledge that influence and shapes policies advancing gender justice in Africa. We’ll produce a blog capturing the sessions discussions input and recommendations from the panelists and participants and publish it on the orgazition;s website share it participants and post on relevant social media platforms.
Hybrid Format: We’ll use a virtual event platform: The virtual event platform will allow us to create a virtual space where both online and onsite attendees can interact. The platform will have features such as live chat, Q&A sessions, and virtual networking spaces that allow the attendees to connect with each other regardless of their location.Testing technology beforehand will be of priority. Before the session the organizers will make sure to test all the technology that will be used for interaction to ensure that everything is working properly. This will help avoid any technical difficulties during the event and ensure a smooth experience for all attendees.
