A. What are the facilitative policies to ensure we are incentivizing investment in networks of the future?
B. What are the existing gaps that might be holding back network investments and exacerbating digital divides?
C. Are there barriers that could arise and prevent stakeholders from making sufficient investments in network innovations?
What will participants gain from attending this session? Participants will learn about the ways broadband networks are configured today and the incentives it creates for ongoing investment and innovation that are important drivers for meaninful connectivity. They will have an opportunity to engage on questions about the policy environment necessary to facilitate future investment and ensure that networks are optimized to meet the needs of users.
Description:
There is a rich ecosystem of investment in broadband infrastructure and other technologies that together deliver the kind of broadband services users demand. Understanding the ecosystem today, and how it optimizes investment to keep pace with demand, is an important step in assessing how to best ensure future broadband networks can deliver connectivity that is meaningful, inclusive, and a sustainable bridge across digital divides.
Investment comes from a range of market participants, technologies and business models which leverage a wide variety of commercial arrangements - from ISPs, transit and interconnection services, to CDNs, cache arrangements, and compressions technologies.
This session will examine how this ecosystem is positioned to meet future demands and how any gaps can be addressed. The panel will feature a discussion between technologists, academics, and governments on the innovations and investment happening at the network edge to facilitate the development of broadband networks of the future.
The organizer will utilize the session as an input to an inventory on broadband network innovation and investment gaps that will be addressed through future research and engagements with stakeholders, including governments in the Asia Pacific region.
Hybrid Format: *How will you facilitate interaction between onsite and online speakers and attendees? Onsite participants will be encouraged to connect to the online platform to stay informed and engage with discussions in the chat. In addition, the organizers will facilitate social media engagement between onsite and online participants.
*How will you design the session to ensure the best possible experience for online and onsite participants? The session will include a presentation on technologies that will offer an accessible and educational engagement for both onsite and online audience. The organizers will seek out specific input on invesment gaps as part of their broader research -- both the panelists and audience (onsit and online) will be asked.
*The organizers will leverage the IGF website, their own website, and social media to increase participation and interaction before, during, and after the session.
