How should current laws be applied to AI (Does copyright infringement apply to AI creations)?
How should the products of generative AI be treated? What is a “derivative work” under intellectual property laws?
How can governments ensure the protection of digital rights and foster innovation while promoting sustainable digital commons and ethical considerations in the face of emerging technologies?
What will participants gain from attending this session? By attending this session, participants will benefit from a multidisciplinary perspective on the nature of AI technology and gain valuable experience working alongside individuals from diverse backgrounds who will provide them with an important viewpoint on how it increasingly affects our society. These participants may encounter contrasting viewpoints on various issues, leading to the generation of distinct solution proposals. During this session participants will have the opportunity to share their empirical knowledge and after productive networking use this experience to deepen their understanding of adverse effects of emerging technologies.
Furthermore, participants will learn about concrete policy recommendations from experienced policy-makers, while simultaneously being in discussion with government representatives. Using such a platform, which is based on knowledge-sharing and multidisciplinary approach, this workshop will establish a digital framework which ensures that the future of AI development has oversight using human centric regulations that have fundamental freedoms at their core.

The rapid advancements in AI have sparked increased demand for oversight in its applications, particularly in the realm of artists using AI tools. Intellectual property rights in generative AI usage are under scrutiny, leading to debates on enforcing restrictions or reevaluating these rights. ChatGPT's development has amplified concerns about plagiarism, disinformation, trust, and AI bias. Without regulation, these issues could have severe consequences.
Governments lack a concrete agreement on how to effectively regulate AI tools and emerging technologies. However, the recent G7 summit addressed this by calling for the establishment of "guardrails" to ensure trustworthy, accurate, non-discriminatory, and safe AI systems.
This workshop and roundtable discussion aims to delve into strategies that promote the smooth, inclusive, accurate, and safe development of AI. The session will emphasize the importance of researching AI tools and understanding their implications. Currently, emerging technologies are advancing at a rapid pace, surpassing the speed of research. This situation often leads to misguided policies or, more commonly, a lack of regulation altogether. Throughout the sessions, policymakers, government representatives, and field experts will come together, drawing on their multidisciplinary knowledge and experience, to discuss the necessary guardrails surrounding AI development.
The workshop participants will analyze the challenges posed by the rapid emergence of AI technologies and their profound social, economic, political, and legal implications. The session will shed light on the essential reforms required to ensure a safe and well-structured future development of these technologies. Furthermore, there will be a dedicated discussion on the impact of generative AI tools on intellectual property rights. Participants will have the opportunity to share best practices and present case studies showcasing how they have addressed these issues within their respective fields.
This workshop will provide a multifaceted platform for participants to discuss their concerns, specifically tailored to their respective fields.
The session will help participants gain a deeper understanding of the social, economic, political, and legal implications of AI tools and emerging technologies. It will seek to raise awareness about the potential benefits and risks associated with these technologies and examine the ‘disruptive’ nature of AI.
Through discussions, the session seeks to identify and highlight key issues including ethical considerations, privacy concerns, bias and fairness, employment implications, policy gaps, and legal frameworks
The session will aim to highlight the importance of responsible development practices in the field of AI and emerging technologies. This may include considerations like privacy-by-design, inclusive design, algorithmic transparency, and human-centric approaches. These practices can be emphasized as essential for preventing the negative consequences of unregulated development.
Hybrid Format: During the session, speakers will be involved in the round table discussion and during the last 30 minutes of the session participants will have the opportunity to ask questions to our speakers. In-person attendees will alternate between online participants, who will use the Zoom application to submit their questions, which will then be read out by the moderator.
Additionally, participants will have the option to use Miro’s sticky notes function, which will increase the chances of real-time collaboration and engagement between participants by creating a simple way to start a conversation between online and live attendees.
