Policy Question(s)

- How can policy frameworks effectively leverage technology solutions to address climate change challenges, while ensuring equitable access and ethical use?
- How can emerging technologies be harnessed to enhance climate change resilience, specifically in the context of climate mobility?
- How can policy interventions promote the adoption and scaling-up of sustainable tech-driven initiatives that address climate change impacts, including displacement and migration?

What will participants gain from attending this session? Participants attending the session at the UN Global Centre for Climate Mobility's Solution Lab will gain:

Deeper understanding: They will acquire knowledge about climate mobility, its challenges, and opportunities associated with the impacts of climate change on sustainable development and people's lives.
Increased awareness: Participants will learn about the diverse effects of climate change, including extreme weather events, water scarcity, rising sea levels, and health challenges, fostering a greater understanding of the urgency for action.
Collaboration and co-creation: The session will encourage constructive collisions and co-creations among communities, enabling participants to exchange ideas and collaborate on innovative solutions for climate mobility challenges through technology.
Transformational learning: Attendees will be exposed to external stimuli and diverse perspectives, facilitating significant transformations in thinking and actions related to climate mobility.

Description:

Climate mobility is emerging as the human face of the climate crisis. There is global consensus that increasingly severe climate impacts threaten sustainable development and the lives and livelihoods of people in many ways, including through the greater frequency and severity of extreme weather events and more slow onset changes such as water scarcity, decreased crop yields, rising sea levels, and health and sanitation challenges, among others. Climate mobility will present us with both challenges and opportunities that are complex and rich in their nature. These prospective situations will require us to spur constructive collisions and co-creations between communities. While learning systems are essential for progress, they often require external stimuli to drive significant transformations in thinking or outputs, such as revolutions or disruptive shifts.

To accelerate climate action and support effective local adaptation, there is first and foremost a need to strengthen adaptive capacities in the most affected places, including by localizing data and research, boosting climate literacy, and expanding climate information services and early warning systems that allow people to make better informed decisions about staying or moving. The need to diversify, downscale and co-produce sources of climate knowledge to guide climate actions that are appropriate to local conditions and to bolster the agency of affected communities is increasingly recognized.

The UN Global Centre for Climate Mobility's Solution Lab will host a soft launch of its Technology Branch as part IGF. The Technology Branch will explore how tech solutions can advance progress on addressing the challenges of climate mobility across the world, but particularly in Africa and the Pacific.

Expected Outcomes

The expected outcomes of attending the session at the UN Global Centre for Climate Mobility's Solution Lab, with a focus on technology, are:

Enhanced understanding of how technology can address the challenges of climate mobility.
Increased collaboration and networking opportunities to leverage technology solutions.
Exposure to innovative tech-driven approaches for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Insights into policy frameworks that promote the adoption and scaling-up of sustainable tech solutions.
Practical knowledge and skills in utilizing technology to address the impacts of climate change, including displacement and migration.

Hybrid Format: To facilitate interaction between onsite and online speakers and attendees, we will employ a hybrid approach that integrates virtual collaboration tools with on-site infrastructure. We will utilize video conferencing platforms to connect online participants with speakers and onsite attendees, enabling real-time engagement through Q&A sessions and panel discussions. To ensure the best possible experience for both online and onsite participants, we will design the session with inclusivity in mind, using multi-camera setups and high-quality audiovisual equipment. Additionally, we will incorporate interactive elements such as live polls, chat features, and virtual breakout rooms to encourage active participation from all attendees. Complementary online tools/platforms may include collaboration platforms like Zoom, event management systems, and interactive audience engagement tools like Mentimeter or Slido.
